About our pastor

Rev. Dr. H. Bernard Young, Sr. is the Senior Pastor of Thankful Missionary Baptist Church in Rome, Georgia.  Pastor Young believes a shift is happening and by faith he is taking the church to another level by sharing the vision of W.O.R.D.S. - Worship, Order, Relevance & Relationships, Discipleship, and Stewardship.

Pastor Young is a native of Wrightsville, Georgia.  He is a product of the Johnson County School System and a graduate of Johnson County High School.  From a very early age Pastor Young exhibited strong character traits.  As a child, he demonstrated a deep sense of compassion and respect for others and possessed exemplary wisdom beyond his years.  Reared by his parents Herbert and Hattie Pearl Young, they laid the foundation and cultivated and fostered his Christian values.

Pastor Young’s ministry is centered on preaching and teaching, but he first began his ministry in music.  Pastor Young grew up in a family of gifted musicians, where he discovered his passion for music, and in turn, became very active in his local church music ministry under the leadership of Reverend James E. Thomas.  However, an ever burning desire within his soul continued urging him toward the calling on his life.  He knew he could no longer substitute the call to preach with the music ministry.  In June 1997, Pastor Young accepted the call God had placed on his life, however, four years passed before commencing his preaching ministry.  In September of 2001, Pastor Young preached his first sermon ''Have You Seen the Light?'' Acts 9:1-6 at Vickers Hill Baptist Church.

As he faithfully served under the leadership of Rev. David Hall, he was blessed to preach several revivals, homecoming and anniversary services throughout the community.  In 2002 proven to be a man of uncompromising faith, with true integrity, vision, and a zeal for the Word; God elevated him, and he was called and served as the thirteenth (13th) Pastor of Scotts Chapel Baptist Church until 2015.  In August 2015, Pastor Young accepted God’s new divine assignment as the twentieth (20th) pastor of Thankful Missionary Baptist Church.

In Pastor Young’s short time at Thankful, ministries and ideas have been conceptualized and implemented under his direction, such as the Leadership Conference, Discipleship Revival, Young Adult Ministry (GOD IDEA), the Youth Ministry (A29), and Bible studies: Truth on Tuesday (T.O.T.) and the continuation of Word on Wednesday and Lunch (W.O.W.L.).  As well as the exposure to international gospel artists, teachers, and preachers.

Pastor Young has accomplished honorable achievements since entering into the ministry in 2001.  With his ever-fervent hunger and thirst to intellectually and spiritually grow in the ministry, he began his theological training in 2004.  He earned an Associate's degree from Tripp Bible Institute in Marion, North Carolina, a Bachelor's degree in Christian Education from Emmanuel Baptist University in Connelly Springs, North Carolina, and both his Master's and Doctorate degrees in Theology from Cason Theological Institute.  He also studied at the Liberty University "Home" Institute in Lynchburg, Virginia where the late Jerry Falwell was chancellor.

Pastor Young has several religious, community, and civic affiliations.  In 2007, he was elected to the board of directors at Cason Theological Institute, where he also served as vice president of the Religious and Christian Education Conference (R.E.C.), he served as a member of the Johnson County Board of Education, his first term commencing in January 2013.  He is an accomplished author of two books: The Importance of Christian Education; and Bridging the Gap (A practical guide for connecting generations of the church).  Pastor Young is a true visionary, as a pastor he has moved forward in implementing effective strategies for church growth and ministry. He sees beyond the walls of the church and sees the community as a whole as a congregation.  During his tenure in the preaching ministry God has enabled him to preach all over the state of Georgia and with his unquenchable desire to spread the unadulterated Word of God, He will undoubtedly use Pastor Young as a catalyst to proclaim His Gospel to the nations.

Pastor Young is married to the former Miss Dolores Daniels, and they are the proud parents of four lovely children: Kerek, Bernauctica, Bianca, and Bernard Jr.
